In the summer of 1985, I embarked on a journey that would profoundly shape my understanding of culture, travel, and personal growth. As a young adventurer, I participated in the Work Experience Abroad program, which led me to the picturesque landscapes of Tochigi Prefecture in Japan. This experience, set against the backdrop of Japan's rapid economic growth during the "Bubble" period, was not just a trip; it was a transformative adventure that would leave a lasting imprint on my life.


A Time of Excitement and Growth


Japan in the mid-1980s was a nation surging towards the future. The economy was booming, technology was advancing at a breakneck pace, and the culture was a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity. Arriving in Japan during this dynamic period, I was immediately captivated by the juxtaposition of ancient traditions with futuristic innovations.

Living with Farming Host Families

The core of my summer experience was living with three different farming families in Tochigi Prefecture. Each family offered a unique window into the Japanese way of life, from daily routines to culinary practices, and deep-rooted customs. These families not only provided shelter and food but also imparted lessons in resilience, hospitality, and the importance of community.

One of my most cherished memories involves participating in early morning rice planting. Knee-deep in mud, alongside my host family and their neighbors, I learned the value of hard work and the communal spirit that pervades rural Japan. These moments of shared labor and subsequent communal meals highlighted a fundamental aspect of Japanese culture: a deep sense of collectivism and mutual support.

Reflecting on that summer in Tochigi, it's clear how deeply those months altered my trajectory. Japan is no longer just a place I visited; it has become a pivotal chapter in my story, one that I revisit often, both in memory and in spirit.
